Taxa Identification From Bone Fragments

If ancient bone fragments are found underwater where DNA contamination is likely due to sewage spills from ships, etc., can human bone fragments be distinguished from bone fragments of other mammals? (By "fragments" I mean pieces too small to determine the morphology of the bone.)
