UK Forensic Science in the 1950s

I am a college lecturer with creative writing students hoping to write about the 1950s in the UK. Two of them are writing crime stories. They need to know where they can obtain information about various forensic procedures undertaken at that time.

For example:

Were there Scene of Crimes Officers in the 1950s? If so, what investigations would they undertake in a situation of non accidental injury within a domestic environment?

I should be grateful for any advice about where these students can read about forensic science at that time.
