Question About Embalming and Time of Death

I was curious to find out a little information on embalming. A lady I work with had a sister who recently passed away. They found her sister's body on the 23 of december and were not sure exactly when she passed.

The coroner said it was too late to embalm her before her burial as she was already decomposing. Is there a time line of some sort that could tell you about what time her sister died?

My friends sister lived in a different state and she seems to be getting the run around and not able to get her questions answered.
