If it looks like poo and smells like poo...

...it probably is poo. Look and smell are pretty good guides. You could use GC or GCMS to test for indole and skatole. The following protocol was used in the Met Police Lab in London:

1. Make an extract of the stain.

2. Examine a portion of the extract for plant cells, muscle cells, body cells and yeast and bacteria.

3. Do a fluorescence test for urobilinogen.
