Master of Arts in Forensic Psychology This Graduate Program in Forensic Psychology encompasses a psychosocial and biblical understanding of psychopathology, law and psychology, and police psychology. The program in forensic psychology is designed to educate clinicians to provide psychological services to the criminal justice system. The program is designed for students whose primary interest and intention is working or studying in areas which intersect with the criminal justice system. Classes focus on the theories, evaluation, adjudication and potential treatment of adult and juvenile offenders. In addition, the program addresses the rights and treatment of victims of crime. Completion of the degree program provides students with an advanced and comprehensive understanding of human development, psychopathology, psychological assessment, specific psychotherapeutic interventions and research methods utilized in the field of forensic psychology. Master of Science in Forensic Psychology: The M.S. in Forensic Psychology option is designed for students whose primary interest is in working or studying in areas of psychology that intersect with the Criminal Justice system. A key feature of the program is a close mentoring relationship with a faculty member who oversees the student's progress toward his or her individual career goals. All students begin their program in the fall quarter and take several core courses together. The program offers an M.S. degree and consists of 52 units of course work, which includes a 9 month practicum where students receive hands on training and on site supervision in a forensic setting related to their individual interests and career goals (e.g., Rape crisis center, Department of Children and Family Services counseling center, the Dependency Courts, the Sheriff's Department, prisons, probation). The program emphasizes theory and research, while providing practical training in the areas of assessment and treatment that will prepare them for their entree to the marketplace after graduation. The course of study is designed to accommodate both students who plan to progress on to doctoral study as well as students who wish to enter the field as Masters level practitioners. Master of Arts in Forensic Psychology This Forensic Psychology program will train students in an emergent area at the intersection between law and psychology as it relates to applying psychological principles to legal issues in judicial, administrative, and educational systems. There is a clear and growing need for professionals with this training and perspective. In addition to compelling statistics regarding the prevalence of mental illness in the United States, a 1998 study published by the Bureau of Justice reported that there were over a quarter of a million incarcerated mentally ill adults nationwide, with less than one-third receiving any mental health services. The M.A. program in Forensic Psychology is designed to train students to meet this growing need. The M.A. Program in Forensic Psychology prepares its graduates to function as professional mental health counselors. Designed to be completed in two years of full-time study, the program conforms to the current educational requirements for Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The curriculum consists of 60 semester credits and a minimum of 960 hours of field work distributed over two consecutive semesters of practicum-level field work and two consecutive semesters of internship. Consistent with MSPP tradition, a hallmark feature of the program is the integration of classroom work with supervised field experience. Students are assigned to clinical field placements from their very first semester and participate in year-long, small-group seminars that are linked to their clinical practica and provide them with a forum for integrating their field experiences with their classroom work and addressing issues pertinent to their development as mental health professionals.
